The Most Anticipated Games of 2017

Wow, there were a lot of promising games out last year. A few disappointments such as FleetCOMM and more than a few you missed as well, but 2016 also gave us a lot of epic titles like Overwatch, Uncharted 4, and Battlefield 1 just to name a few. You may still have a stack of games to work through, but 2017 is here and it has its fair share of fantastic titles as well. Here are seven games we are very excited to see on our screens this year.

God of War 4

God of War - Troll

Developer: Sony Santa Monica (Known for God of War, Bound, Sound Shapes)
Platform: PS4
Type: Action Adventure

The return of Kratos was a big surprise for everyone in attendance at the PlayStation Press Conference earlier this year at E3. This was not the God of War who had raged his way through Olympus. No, this Kratos is older, sports a terrific beard, and has taken up the responsibilities of fatherhood. Sony Santa Monica has reworked the gameplay mechanics to include Kratos’s new son, who will play a key part of the game and will not just be some AI to escort from point A to point B. They have also moved the camera to over the shoulder to help put the focus on the boy, but also emphasize the stunning new environments they have been developing.

The biggest change it that Kratos has replaced his iconic chains in favor of an ax that does frost damage and will be using it against a new pantheon of Norse gods. It looks like Sony Santa Monica is creating a story that is not simply about revenge, and we are excited to see Kratos grow into his new role. Of course, we are also excited for more brutal finishers and the satisfying visceral combat that the franchise is known for as well.

Developer: Arkane Studios (Known for Dishonored)
Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Type: Action Suspense

Arkane Studios is bringing back a 2006 IP for the next generation. They have not revealed too much, but it’s set aboard a desolate space station and seems to have elements of Bioshock and Dead Space while maintaining their own distinctive art style and gameplay structure. Prey will be open-ended and players will be able to explore and play however they like. Use stealth or go loud, focus on alien abilities or retain your humanity. Problems can be solved in a number of different ways which should give players a lot of replayability and opportunities to experiment. Arkane blew us away with Dishonored and Dishonored 2 and have proven they are capable of building rich fascinating worlds with creative game mechanics.

Resident Evil: Biohazard

Developer: Capcom (Known for Resident Evil)
Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Type: Horror

Resident Evil 7 has been tempting us with new variations on its demo all year. At first difficult to identify, this survival horror contribution to the franchise is most definitely Resident Evil. There are weapons of course, but the game will have strong puzzle solving mechanics and an array of mutants to survive against. The small bits of gameplay we have experienced are full of harrowing jump scares and a strategic build up of suspense that horror gamers will love. Those brave enough to try it on VR, exclusively for PSVR owners, are subjected to complete and terrifying immersion.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Developer: Nintendo
Platform: Nintendo Switch, Wii U
Type: Action Adventure

The Nintendo Switch will be out next year and there are a lot of great Nintendo titles that will accompany it. One of the most promising is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Its beautiful HD water color visuals make it a joy to watch, and the open world approach puts gives players the ability to explore and complete the game in the order they would like.

After awakening from a 100-year slumber, Link finds Hyrule has been ravaged by a terrible evil known as Calamity Ganon. The threat has been locked away, but Link must set out to destroy it before it becomes too powerful. Fans have been waiting for this since 2013 and, while it has met with several delays, Nintendo has been showing off gameplay footage at numerous shows. Hopefully, this means the latest 2017 release date will deliver. Sadly, Breath of the Wild will not be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch. It seems like a missed opportunity but we would rather they not rush it. We are still expecting it later in 2017 for the Switch and Wii U.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Developer: Guerrilla Games (Known for Killzone)
Platform: PS4
Type: Action Role Playing

Set 1000 years in the future when civilization has reverted back to a tribal organization, and the machines that humanity once depended on have taken on a primal life of their own. They roam the land similar to herbivores and carnivores do today. Players take control of a hunter named Aloy and will explore the open world as they uncover the secret of the machines.

Horizon Zero Dawn is being developed by Guerilla Games who plan to take full advantage of the new power the PS4 Pro has to offer with stunning lush environments and dynamic effects. This title is well beyond the scope of any of their previous projects, but it will likely have satisfying action. From what we have seen so fa,r it is an intriguing premise and looks incredible. You can expect it for the PS4 in February.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Developer: Bioware (known for the Mass Effect Franchise)
Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Type: Action Role Playing

Ever since the climatic conclusion of the original Mass Effect trilogy, fans have been eager to have more. Bioware has set a course for a new galaxy where players will be able to explore, build relationships, and fight their way to success. Players will be on a mission to find a new home for humanity somewhere in the Andromeda Galaxy. Players can build their own unique classes as they progress, as the game will allow you to play to your strengths. Bioware has given players a lot of tools and resources in Andromeda, but you will have to scourer the galaxy to find them to build your arsenal and skills. It will feature massive worlds to explore and multiple factions to fight or befriend. The new combat system features a wide array of weapons and abilities. That’s a good thing too because these new worlds are full of dangers from warring factions to local fauna. There are even environmental hazards to challenge players.

Andromeda‘s combat looks dynamic and variable enough for any player to find their place. Bioware continues to share amazing content previewing their new title and promise a Spring 2017 release. Andromeda will be available for all the major systems, but only PS4 Pro and PC players will get to enjoy it in 4K.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Developer: Rockstar Games (Known for GTA & RDR)
Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Type: Open World Action Adventure

Red Dead Redemption was the winning combination of exciting gameplay and engaging story. Exploring New Austin, West Elizabeth, and Nuevo Paraiso and meeting the colorful personalities, getting into gunfights, and occasionally tying people to train tracks were all part of the fun. Basically, we all just loved being bad-ass cowboys.

Rockstar have been very busy since 2010 giving players the chaotic playground of GTV V, but we were all relieved to hear they had made time for this fan favorite. There is a lot of speculation on what could be included in the sequel, but it is very likely we will see a larger world to explore, the return of classic gunslinging and the addition of expanded online capabilities similar to GTA. Rockstar says we can expect this in Fall 2017 and hopefully not a moment later.

2017 has a lot of great titles to offer, these were a few we are most looking forward too. We want to hear what you are desperate to play, so make sure to join in the conversation below or talk to us on Facebook, Twitter, or on our forums!
