Game Preview: Brawlout

Brawlout is an all-out war with colorful backdrops and unique character designs that lets you compete with up to seven other players online or locally.

In Brawlout, Angry Mob Games has developed a complex fighting game with a vibrant visual design. The diverse group of fighters each has their own distinct advantages, including powerful projectiles or long-range attacks and the game takes a different approach to the combat technique. Fighters can be evolved  and learn new combos or advanced moves.

Although it does have a single player mode and is very accessible for local play with friends, Angry Mob Games wants Brawlout to be the new competitive fighter of choice for eSports events. But, its unique design may not be enough to set itself ahead of the rest.

We got our hands on the beta version at PAX South and after going a few rounds with the developers, we were impressed by the fluid fighting controls and bright visual style. The moves felt very accessible and the match had a good flow to it.

The character design sets itself apart from other brawler games, taking an almost Pixar approach to the design of its fighters. They are all unique both in terms of visual design and fighting style. Even though they are animated characters, it is clear Angry Mob Games is trying to keep the set diverse. The only downside is that currently there are only five playable characters (with three more on the way soon). This gives players limited options.

The Brawlout fighters are all unique but there is a very limited selection.

What is very interesting about Brawlout’s approach to its fighters is the how they grow with the player. Each character starts out with only basic attacks. Unlike typical fighting games where all moves are always available but only skilled players can properly use them in Brawlout, players can build on those with special attacks, new combo options, and more movement abilities. You can even teach your fighter advanced moves.  Fighting also builds a player’s Rage Meter, which can be used to execute powerful special attacks.

Speaking with the Angry Mob Games developers at PAX South we had the opportunity to learn about their ambitious plans for eSports. This is designed to be a competitive fighting game and it does support ranked online tournaments. Angry Mob Games is currently developing a more robust community to support Brawlout.

Final Thoughts

Unique design and very fluid controls make Brawlout a solid fighting game. It supports more than enough players in a single game, but there is not enough variation. At the end of the day, the value of any fighting game is in its roster of fighters. Even though they are very different from one another, there are a limited number of characters. They are also competing against more established fighting games with more impressive rosters and larger communities.

Brawlout will be available in early 2017 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you are interested, you can get your hands on the game early by applying for the beta on the Brawlout webpage. They will be sending a new wave of beta codes out in approximately a week.
