Game of Thrones Returns This Summer

HBO has revealed via a Facebook Live event that the next season of their fantasy drama will premiere July 16, 2017.

The Game of Thrones Facebook Channel hosted an hour-long event where fans watched a block of ice melt. Fans were encouraged to interact with the event by typing “FIRE” to melt the block. Millions of fans participated as the block was torched with flame throwers until it melted enough to reveal the new season’s premiere date of July 16, 2017. Promptly afterward Game of Thrones social channels were all updated today to include teasers for the upcoming season.

The teaser trailer featuring 3D renderings of the various house sigils crumbling was set to a composition of quotes from the previous season. It culminates in one new line of dialog from John Snow:

There is only one war that matters. The Great War. And it is here.

Game of Thrones is entering its seventh season. HBO adapted the series from George R. R. Martin’s novels, however, the show has developed a spectacular level of fandom all it’s own. Last summer the premier of season six drew almost eight million viewers and over 10.7 million when accounting for viewers who streamed the episode afterward. The series still takes heavily from the books, even though the series overtook the novels in season six.

Season seven is expected to draw on the events of the unreleased seventh novel in the series titled A Dream of Spring. It is likely we can expect the most bloody season yet as the series goes into all out war. You can watch the full teaser right here.
